Al Niqab banned in Syria
While attention has been on the efforts of European countries (notably France) to ban the Al Niqab, the Syrian government quietly announced in July that woman wearing the Al Niqab will not be allowed to teach or study in universities. This decision reflects governmental concern over a perceived shift among the population toward a more liberal brand of conservative Islam. (The ban does not affect the Hijab, which many Syrian women wear).
