US Senator in vanguard visit to Damascus

President Assad in Damascus has seen a flurry of Western visitors in the last four months Initially it was the Europeans, then the British and finally the Americans with Sen Bill Nelson, Florida Democrat first up. Despite initial opposition from the State Department he was escorted from Jordan by car.

Bill Nelson appears to disagree with Assad on Lebanon, but said that Syria was willing to co-operate in Iraq.

INTERESTING - No mention made of the fact that he travelled from Tel Aviv to Damascus following a meeting with Irael's premier Olmert.
