What next for Syria?

Until recently, the West was hesitant to criticise President Assad, due to Syria's strategic importance in the region and fears of possible civil war if the regime were to collapse.

However, in his recent keynote speech about the Middle East, President Obama called for President Assad to lead a political transition or “get out”. Obama said "The Syrian government must stop shooting demonstrators and allow peaceful protests."

A potential power vacuum within Syria, if Assad falls, is worrying for Israel. The emergence of a more radical regime in Syria could mean a stronger Iran-Syria-Hezbollah axis.
