The Syrian government hosted a three day conference on the Golan Heights in the bombed out town of Quneitra, just across the lines from the Israeli-occupied Golan. Some 300 members of the media, as well as human rights activists attended.
Bashar al-Assad said that there could not be comprehensive peace without the return of the Golan. He stated that a negotiated settlement would be a preferable, but that if this failed, there would be grounds for a legitimate [i.e. armed] resistance.
