End of US influence in the Middle East

An article by Richard Haass in Foreign Affairs for November, argues that America is no longer a trusted power in the Middle East. Despite an overwhelmingly bleak scenario for the region, Haass points to a few diplomatic manoeuvers which may save the day from everyone's point of view - these include talking to Syria, weaning it away from Iran and restarting talks on the return of the Golan.
